Universities in Malaysia: Top Public & Private Universities

With more than 20 public universities, dozens of private institutions and a growing list of international branch campuses, comparing universities in Malaysia means sorting through a long list. This guide breaks it down, ranks each major institution using the QS World University Rankings 2027, and explains what sets them apart.

Whether the shortlist includes a public Research University, a homegrown private university, or the Malaysian campus of a university from the UK or Australia, here is where each one currently stands and what it is known for.

What Are the Top Universities in Malaysia?

Malaysia’s top-ranked institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2027 are Monash University Malaysia (#31) and Universiti Malaya (#56), Malaysia’s leading public university, alongside three more public universities inside the global top 200 and a fast-rising group of private universities such as Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Taylor’s University, UCSI University and Sunway University.

Top Public Universities in Malaysia

Malaysia has 20 public universities, according to the Ministry of Higher Education’s own figures, and five of them hold Research University status, the country’s top designation for research funding and postgraduate focus, according to Higher Education Strategy Associates’ overview of Malaysia’s system. Here is how each one currently stands.

Universiti Malaya (UM)

Malaysia’s ranked institutions now total 32 in the QS World University Rankings 2027, up from just 7 in 2014, according to The Star, a sign of how fast the sector is climbing.

EMGA is a direct partner of many of these universities, which lets a counsellor speak to real, current admissions details across a wide range of budgets and subject strengths.

How to Choose the Right University in Malaysia

With this many strong options, the choice usually comes down to a few practical filters:

  • Accreditation: Confirm the programme is approved by Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
  • Subject strength over overall rank: Check subject-level tables for the course that actually matters, not just the headline position.
  • Public versus private: Public universities are usually cheaper but slower to admit; private universities and branch campuses tend to admit faster.
  • Total cost of attendance: Compare tuition, accommodation and living costs together rather than tuition figures alone.

This is also the point where many families bring in an education counsellor rather than comparing dozens of admissions pages alone. Services such as EMGA’s education counselling exist specifically to match a student’s academic profile and budget to the right university before an application is submitted, rather than after.

Students from the Middle East have also spoken positively about studying at Malaysian universities, particularly the multicultural environment and opportunities to grow beyond the classroom.

Eyad Basem Saleh Husain Al Shehab, Bahrain
Sunway University. He described making friends from different countries, learning from his lecturers and taking part in international student activities during his time there.

“My experience has involved continuous learning and practical exposure.”

Ahmed Ragai Nasr, Egypt
Bachelor of Science (Honours) Finance and Investment, UCSI University. Ahmed also encouraged future students to pursue internships, develop practical skills and remain engaged throughout their studies.

“For international students considering Malaysia, these experiences show that choosing a university is not just about rankings. The campus environment, international community and opportunities to build practical skills can have just as much impact on the overall study experience.”

Take the Next Step Towards Studying in Malaysia

A strong university choice goes beyond rankings alone. Students should also consider whether the programme matches their academic interests, whether the overall cost fits their budget, and whether the available intake and entry requirements work with their study plans.

This is where Education Malaysia Global Assist (EMGA) comes in. With a monthly education fair and university-recruitment event running consistently, offices spanning Malaysia, Brunei, the GCC and beyond, and direct partnerships across nearly every major private university in the country, EMGA turns this list into a shortlist a family can actually act on. For eligible applicants, EMGA’s support includes free student visa processing support, flight ticket rebates, and an application fee waiver, on top of hands-on guidance through scholarship applications, financial planning, arrival logistics, university registration and accommodation.

Instead of comparing universities one by one, students and parents can use this shortlist as a starting point and speak with an EMGA counsellor about the options that best match their preferred course, budget and plans. Explore EMGA’s Scholarships & Education Grants to see what financial support may be available, or contact us to speak directly with the EMGA team and take the next step towards studying in Malaysia.
